MEET OUR SPEAKERS:
Jennifer Hill – Huntington’s Disease
HD is a fatal genetic disorder that causes the progressive breakdown of nerve cells in the brain. It deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities during their prime working years. The average life expectancy following diagnosis is 10–30 years. San Diego local, Jennifer Hill is one of the30,000 Americans affected by the disease. Jenny will start showing symptoms in about 10 years and she’ll only live another decade or two unless we find a cure.
Jenny and her family have been battling with HD since she was six years old when her mother began to show signs of chorea and other neurological symptoms. As a young teenager she was a caretaker for her mom before she committed suicide due to the affects of HD. HD is known as the quintessential family disease because every child of a parent with HD has a 50/50 chance of carrying the faulty gene… there are more than 200,000 at-risk of inheriting the disease.
After five years teaching special education students in public middle schools, Jenny decided she’d rather work closer with each student in mental health capacity. So she became a licensed professional clinical counselor. (An LPCC offers treatment and counseling to those with mental health and substance abuse issues.) In 2016 Jenny launched Healing Hearts Counseling Center where she works with families, couples, adolescents, and children. She specializes in play therapy for child development and parent training, EMDR therapy for trauma victims, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for anxiety and depression.
When not working Jenny loves the beach, spends time with her dogs, hangs out with her friends, is at church and on her new wakeboard boat. Learn more about her at our San Diego Happy Hour this October.
Tiffany Melone – Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes (previously called insulin-dependent or juvenile diabetes) is usually diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults, but it can develop at any age. The pancreas of T1 diabetics makes very little or no insulin, a hormone that enables blood sugar to enter the cells in your body where it can be used for energy. High blood sugar is damaging to the body and can cause death. San Diego local, Tiffany Melone is one of over 7 million Americans with diabetes that rely on daily insulin injections to stay alive.
It takes a lot of work to manage diabetes daily – checking blood sugar levels, calculating insulin doses, taking insulin injections, correcting low and high blood sugars, and dealing with all of the side effects that are caused by sugar imbalances. Diagnosed at the age of 9, Tiffany has been managing her Type 1 diabetes for more than 2 decades. Diabetes was already in her genetics – her maternal great grandmother had it and then her youngest sister was also diagnosed at the age of 9.
After working in PR and Events for a few years Tiffany launched boutique communications agency, Delicious Buzz in 2009. DB specializes in public relations, content creation, social media management and event production for an eclectic mix of California and Hawaii clients in many industries from art, events and food to health, nonprofit and travel. Tiffany places clients on news outlets like ABC News, Hawaii News Now, Modern Luxury Magazines, PBS, San Diego Magazine, andUnion Tribune San Diego. Her and her team also produce 20+ events yearly – everything from 25 person influencer events and 150 person launch parties to fundraisers for 500 and festivals with 10,000+ in attendance.
When not on site with a client or event, find Tiffany on the beach, beekeeping, in a hot yoga class, traveling, or eating “all the good food” with one of her foodie blogger friends. Learn more about her at our San Diego Happy Hour this October.
