The Honolulu chapter of the Amazing Care Network benefited enormously from an outstanding presentation by Jeannette Koijane, executive director of Kokua Mau, Hawaii’s hospice and palliative care organization. She was joined by colleagues Mia Taylor and Pat Nishimoto.
Jeannette’s presentation was all about having “the conversation” with loved ones long before a medical crisis requires families to figure out what a patient’s wishes may be for end-of-life care. The discussion was enlivened by stories from ACN members of how those conversations have created openness and clarity among family members. For example, I shared that my husband and I make it a practice to review with our sons our Advanced Directive and “Five Wishes” every year on our wedding anniversary. We feel much more at peace now knowing that our sons understand what we want and are supportive of our desires.
While the topic was a serious one, I was struck by how how lively the conversation was around the room. Our members engaged fully and thoughtfully. We were asked to give a one-word description of how we felt about the presentation, and words like “more knowledgeable, grateful, concerned and informed” came up often. Warmest mahalo to Jeannette, Mia and Pat for sharing great information and insights! – Cora
