December always involves an increased flurry of activity – from shopping for presents to cleaning/organizing the house in preparation for family visits. As I move around, I’m reminded that as an older person, I’m at an increased risk for falls, a truly dreadful outcome.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) published a sobering list of facts and figures about falls. Here are the ones I found particularly interesting:
- More than one out of 4 older people (defined as 65 years and older) falls each year, and less than half tell their doctor
- Falling once doubles your chances of falling again
- Each year, 3 million older people are treated in emergency rooms for fall injuries. Over 800,000 a year are hospitalized, often because of a head injury or hip fracture.
- The good news: falls can be prevented. The article described simple strategies such as talking to one’s doctor about reviewing medicines and over-the-counter drugs that can make one dizzy; doing strength and balance exercises, having your eyes checked; and making your home safer by getting rid of things that you could trip over, having more light in our home, etc. The full article can be found HERE.
Our Amazing Care Network events have featured speakers who have discussed ways to make our homes safer as well as how we can maintain physical balance and a strong core to prevent falls and/or cushion injuries in event of falls. These talks are part of our ongoing commitment to helping us age well and in control.
