MEET OUR SPEAKER:
Emilie Reas – Dr. Emilie Reas received her B.A. in Cognitive Neuroscience from UC Berkeley and her Ph.D. in Neurosciences from UC San Diego. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Neurosciences department at UC San Diego, where she uses MRI to study brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease. Her research focuses on two main questions. First, how does the structure of the brain change in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease, and can these changes help to predict whether an otherwise normal individual will eventually develop dementia? Second, how do health and lifestyle factors–such as exercise, alcohol intake or diet–influence how the brain ages and how rapidly we experience cognitive decline in older age?
In her talk, Dr. Reas will address the following questions:
- What are current guidelines for healthy alcohol consumption?
- How does alcohol affect risk for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias?
- How do drinking patterns relate to cognitive function in normal aging?
- How does alcohol influence brain health?
- What are the positive and negative effects of alcohol on other health conditions?
