If you’re over the age of 60 and looking to become more active, there are a plethora of sports/activities in which you can engage. We recommend finding a community team to join, as the social aspect of the activity can add a lot to the experience – especially if you’re retired and/or widowed. Google or visit your city’s Parks & Recreation Department for teams, classes, and recreational facilities near you.
1) Swimming
This is perhaps the best activity choice, thanks to its low-impact, high-benefits nature: swimming strengthens muscles and keeps your lungs healthy in a gentle way. Swimming is also excellent for physical therapy and those recovering from recent injuries or strains.
2) Shuffleboard
Yes, shuffleboard! You can play one on one, two on two, or even in teams in a tournament. It gets you moving, competitive, and in a social setting.
3) Bowling
The perfect blend of fun, exercise, and competition: bowling is a popular sport at any age, but it’s particularly favored among senior citizens because of the low-impact physical exertion it requires.
4) Pickleball
This net game is similar to tennis, but exerts far less stress on the joints than other racquet sports. It’s easy to pick up, and many retirement communities offer pickleball courts.
5) Bicycling
Another great sport for those with weak or bad joints, bike riding is a great sport that allows low-impact cardio — and lots of fresh air. As you get stronger and more able, you can go for longer rides in all sorts of environments and explore your community.
